When Science Meets Cooking

Hi friends,

if this post can do anything, I hope that it’ll make you curious to learn about new things or to at least consider your next cooking session a real science project. Because you know what? Cooking is science (not only of course but you’ll know better what I mean in a second)!

Harvard Science and Cooking Lecture – What it is

What made me think about food and cooking that way? It most definitely was attending the Harvard Science and Cooking Public Lecture. It’s a public and free lecture series organized by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard and it pairs Harvard professors with celebrated food experts and renowned chefs to showcase the science behind different culinary techniques. Cool, right?

It’s already in its seventh year and you’re able to find some old and new footage of recorded lectures online over at the Harvard YouTube channel. If a rainy day comes around again and you are somewhat interested in food and/or science, this is be a fantastic way to spend your time. Let me know what you thought! So if you aren’t a local (full schedule of upcoming lectures and guest to be found here), check out some of the videos below and on YouTube.

The last lecture I attended was by the great local superstar and Harvard graduate Joanne Chang and it was all about the science of sugar. While I wasn’t able to find the video about the talk I attended I managed to find the video of the lecture she did back in 2015. It’s just really cool to learn about sugar in such a new and unexpected way. Have a watch!

America’s Food Truck Obsession

Hi friends,

A phenomena that I’ve come across here in the US over and over again, no matter where I go, is that food trucks are incredibly popular. Way more than in Europe. They literally are everywhere on university campuses such as Harvard or MIT, actually on any bigger place in downtown in the midst of all the office buildings and spread around the city. Heck, the city of Boston even has an official food truck map and a schedule sorted by neighborhood on their website (check it out here if you’re a local reader and wish to know when you’re favorite food truck will stop nearby you). There are food truck festivals basically every weekend. Yes. We take our food trucks seriously around here.

The popularity of Food Trucks in the US

After the recession the popularity of food truck has gotten a huge boost as many people that got laid off decided to take the risk of running their own business. These mobile restaurants are more affordable than a “real restaurant” and as they run on volume they can reach high sales pretty quickly. What type of food would you serve up in your own food truck if you ever were to open one? (I looooved the Cookie Monstah food truck, AH-MAZING cookies).

My September Favorites

So without further ado, here come the things that made it on my September favorites list. What things have you been loving lately?

#GAGA: FIVE FOOT TWO

Seriously guys, watch this Netflix documentary! I NEVER was a fan of hers, I found all those costumes and wigs to be too much to be honest. BUT. This documentary changed my opinion on her  (my friends can attest that I have been harassing them to watch it over the last couple of days). You’ll get a glimpse into her life, her views on women in the entertainment business and on living with chronic pain. I don’t know if I was already feeling emotional but I definitely had to cry. Let me know what you thought!

#2 Everything lululemon

Buying lululemon work out gear seriously was a gamechanger. The quality is beyond amazing and worth the investment. I’m most willing to spend money on leggings and sports bras because I feel like that’s were the good quality is most important. What do you like investing in when it comes to work out gear?

#3 Everything Meyer’s Clean Day

Can you tell that I’m old? I’m including cleaning products in my favorites. Seriously though, the products by Meyer’s Clean Day are amazing. And that’s something that I really think Americans got down better than us Europeans. There’s so much choice in the cleaning section here. Bonus: They’re not full of nasty chemicals but smell delicious AND get the job done. WIN-WIN!

#4 American Fall Traditions

I’m looking forward to go apple picking, to having hot apple cider and cider donuts, basically everything apple related. Or pumpkin related (more on that to come soon). I hope to be able to go apple picking soon with friends, in case you’re a local and interested in some suggestions on where to go, check out this helpful map.

#5 Breakfast LOVE

I’ve just recently realized that breakfast really is my favorite meal of the day. Especially now the days get to be a little colder again I am all into my porridge with freshly chopped up fruit. A new favorite of ours is to put a liiiiittttleee tiny bit of maple syrup on it. It gives the whole thing a great and delicate little flavor, love it! What’s your favorite meal of the day?

 

San Francisco: Karl, Standing in Line and (Too Much) Mexican Food

…not that you could ever have too much Mexican food. It’s the best food ever, am I right?

But in other more important news, hello again dear friends! Hello!

We’re back after three weeks of traveling through California. And I get everyone now who says they love California. It really is a very cool place. The weather is just amazing (E-V-E-R-Y-D-A-Y), people are super nice and it’s just a really diverse and interesting state to travel through. Oh and the beaches, the ocean and the palm trees. Those aren’t too shabby either.

So, what have you been up to this summer? How has September, how has fall been treating you so far? I hope  this finds you feeling well and energized for the last couple months of 2017 (crazy, how fast this year went by).

San Francisco in a nutshell

I’ll start this little series on our Californian roadtrip with what was our first stop. San Francisco. Are you ready?

I’ve come up with a little ritual where I’d ask Philipp to sum up his impression of places we visited using three words. (To be fair, he would tell you that I forced him to do it. But hey, isn’t it interesting to see what everyone says?) My San Francisco summary is the one you see up there in the title. I have been impressed by the willingness of San Franciscans (is that how you call them?) to queue up in front of coffee shops, creameries, restaurants, bakeries, anywhere really. And we’re not talking about 5 minutes, we’re talking 30+ minutes. Of course Philipp thinks no ice cream or croissant in the world is worth waiting for that long but obviously I get sucked into the whole mystery of wanting to know if it really is worth it? Why would they wait for so long? Let me tell you something we stood in line twice and I was a little disappointed (more about that in the San Francisco Food edit post.)

5 Things That Make Me Happy Right Now

I haven’t done a Favorites post in what feels like years. Still, I thought I’d share 5 random things that I loved over the last few weeks. Let’s get started, shall we?

#1 Icarus and Jinx

Both the Icarus documentary as well as the Jinx miniseries definitely are NOT the type of thing to make you happy per se but they are so well made that you’ll want to keep watching. The last Jinx episode is just like…..OMG ahhhh…crazy. Thumbs up for those two.

#2 Planning our Californian Honeymoon

People, the level of excitement I’m feeling for this three week long trip, it’s HIGH. VERY HIGH UP THERE. Who else LOVES planning trips (equally as good as going on the actual trip itself, right?, all of my organizing fanatic friends are on my side). Researching restaurants and bakeries, nice hiking routes, cool treehouse hotels just makes me sooo happy. Also, if any of you have tips you want to share about San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, the West Coast in general or Los Angeles, hit me up!

#3 Homebody Heaven

Maybe it’s knowing that I’ll practically be out on the road all of September and moving house soon that really makes me want to stay at home as often as I can. I’ve been loving giving myself pampering sessions, catching up on reading and watching Netflix (see #1). Ahhh I love that cozy, relaxed staying at home feeling. Do you, too?

#4 My Fitness Routine

Does it sound pretentious to call it my ‘fitness routine’? Still, with my agenda in hand, cozied up in bed on a Sunday evening, I’ll look at the week ahead and will plan when I want to workout. That way I’ll make sure to stick to a plan and not miss it. Also, I’ve done the Harvard Stairs again this weekend and was able to finish them at my Personal Best. 

#5 My Skincare Routine

If you’ve read my post about my current skincare staples (see post here) you’ll know that I’ve been loving The Ordinary and Weleda lately. They still prove to be very good and I enjoy my skincare routine a lot right now. Especially when using the Ordinary products I feel like a proper scientist.

Come To The Farmer’s Market With Me

how are you today? Do you love Farmer’s Markets as much as I do?

It’s something I’ve really been getting into during the last few months and I really enjoy getting to see the people behind the produce and foods I buy. I love discovering all the colors and shapes (look at those tomatoes!) of all the vegetables and fruits that you definitely don’t get to see at the supermarket.

Last Saturday I went to the Union Square Farmer’s Market in Somerville. It’s a beautiful market with cute live music band playing and with lots of interesting and friendly market stalls. Come and join me on my walk through the market!

Ricotta Toast Is The New Avocado Toast (It’s A Thing)

Hello everyone,

what have you been eating for breakfast lately? If you were to ask me there’d be only one answer: (TOO MANY) Ricotta Toasts.

I just love them so much. And they seem to be quite popular around here (goodbye Avocado toasts), so if I ever go out for breakfast I’ll find them on the menu waiting for me to be devoured. Have you ever had a ricotta toast? If not let me introduce you to my favorite ideas on how to have a ricotta toast. Do let me know if you’ve tried it!

Ricotta Toast aka the most versatile toast EVER

Ricotta toast is one of the most versatile options in the toast world (yes, I just wrote that). My favorite option by far is having a sweet toast. What does that entail? Add fresh fruit like berries, banana slices, figs or pears on top of your ricotta toast. If you’re feeling lazy just top the toast with a bit of your favorite (high quality) preserve and maybe even sprinkle a little bit of pepper on it. D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. Oh yeah. If you want to keep it even more simple, just pour a little honey or syrup on top.

If you’re thinking ‘Sandra, I do not like all that sweet stuff, give me something else’, I’ve got you covered. You can top your toast with fresh herbs or roasted veggies and it will make for a delicious combination, too.

I realize now that you can basically put ANYTHING on a ricotta toast and it will taste delicious, what do you think?

My 5 Favourite YouTube Channels At The Moment

Ok, so I promised to be real around here.

And I am. If I have a guilty pleasure it has to be watching YouTube. Today’s is going to be about my top 5 favourite YouTube channels.

Yes, I know know. I watch YouTube for escapism reasons (all of my fellow media and communications friends will know what I mean). Anyways, in case you want to relax and just consume something entertaining (because the thought of actually actively doing something seems difficult or watching something too complicated and demanding). So, those are my 5 favorite YouTube channels, maybe there’s something in for you, too. (I just realized that selection might be a bit more feminine, sorry guys).

#1 The Anna Edit

Well Anna, if you’re ever reading this. I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND! While that might make you feel all cringy I think we’d really hit it off. Yes I do. For all of you who are interested in lifestyle, beauty, food and bits of fashion but all in a really cool and easy and not over the top kind of way, this is your channel. Also, can we take a moment to just listen to this beautiful English accent, so nice!

#2 Estée Lalonde

I’ve been following Estée’s channel for a few years now. She’s Canadian but moved to London for love and is now making videos about all things London lifestyle, beauty, interiors, style in general, books and the list goes on. She has also made a few videos on the topics of feminism and the stylishness and the house Estée lives in are JUST ON ANOTHER LEVEL. So beautiful.

#3 Pick up Limes

I’ve discovered Saida’s channel only a few months ago but really appreciate this nutritionist’s videos on minimalism, vegan recipes and just life tips and hacks in general. You really see the effort she puts in every video and her voice has just something so soothing to it. Don’t you think?

#4 Sarah’s Day

This Australian girl is just so nice. Her accent is, too. She also seems to be super easy going and approachable. Besides showing us the great life of living in Sydney she is all about that healthy fitness and food lifestyle. Check her out if you’re into that!

#5 SORTEDfood 

It’s all about the food. Need I say more? Cool (is it ok to still use cool?) and inspiring channel, check it out yo.

And last but not least, my all time favorite not needing to be in a top 5 because it is just the best…is…..you might have guessed it: Yoga with Adriene!

3 Easy And Healthy Summer Recipes

I don’t know about you but if temperatures are rising like they have around here for the last couple of days I am always looking for fresh and easy to put together food options.

I happy to share some of my favorite suuuuuuuper easy (like REALLY) recipes with you today. We’ve got an allrounder berry chia seed jam or vegan nutella, a fresh salad and a refreshing smoothie for you. Let me know if you’ve tried on of the recipes!

#1 Easiest berry chia seed jam EVER

Pick Up Limes makes a return on the blog today with this super easy and healthy recipe for a berry chia seed jam (see the post about my favorite YouTube channels here) because she just has so many great ideas. It’ll literally only take you 5 minutes to prep. Here’s how to do it:

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries (or other frozen berry)
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries (or other frozen berry)
  • 2 Tbsp chia seeds 
  • 1 Tbsp apple juice (or sub orange juice)

Directions

Microwave berries for about 3 minutes. After this, smash the berries with a fork until more juices seep out, but some chunks remain. 

Add the chia seeds and juice, and stir to combine. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes for the chia seeds to gel, stirring once halfway. Store in an airtight container and enjoy with toast, on oatmeal, in breakfast parfaits, and more!

If you’re more into chocolate than into berries, check out the video below for another super easy recipe for a vegan nutella spread. This is definitely one to be tried next.

You can enjoy this jam on toast or oatmeal to naturally sweeten, or in your yogurt or granola bowl for breakfast. It’s loaded with antioxidants, fiber, minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fats from the chia seeds.

#2 Strawberry Avocado Spinach Salad with Poppyseed

This delicious recipe for a Strawberry Avocado Spinach Salad is done in 15 minutes and easy to make as well, full of great fresh flavors, and tossed with a simple poppyseed dressing. The combination of fruit, avocado and spinach really works out super nicely!

#3 Detox Green Smoothie

I really am missing my blender. I don’t currently own one but used to do one every other day as a pick me up snack in the afternoon or as a breakfast drink. You drink this. You’ll feel healthy instantly. And it also fills you up nicely, give it a try. You’ll find the recipe by Madeleine Shaw here.

American Food Trends 2017

you like food, do you? I have been researching a little and even though we’re already in August, I thought I’d share a bit of the foods and drinks I’ve found to be hugely popular around here. Which of these have you tried already or would like to try?

#1 Kombucha

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve totally succumbed to the Kombucha hype. Have you, too? So let’s start off with what it actually is: Kombucha is a fermented beverage consisting of black tea and sugar that’s used as a probiotic food.

The bacteria formed in the process line your digestive tract and support your immune system, as they absorb nutrients and fight infection and illness. And, since 80 percent of your immune system is located in your gut, and the digestive system is the second largest part of your neurological system this is pretty relevant, right?

I’ve started drinking a bit of Kombucha everyday now and so far, so good!

#2 Pickles and Fermented Foods

Fermentation seems to be one of THE biggest current food trends. It is no wonder that you’ll find tons of pickled vegetables or kimchi and sauerkraut on lots of restaurant menus. Do you like them?

#2 Kefir

Wow, yet ANOTHER fermented drink to add to the list! It is all the rage in the natural health community as it is high in nutrients and probiotics again and therefore incredibly beneficial for digestion and gut health. Many people even go on to say that Kefir is the healthier and more powerful version of yogurt. And I have to say, if you don’t mind the salty taste you’ll like this as an alternative to yogurt (if you want to switch things up every now and again and feel adventurous).

#3 Thai Styled Ice Cream

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve only heard or seen photos of those beautifully shaped ice creams on Instagram before but they have become hugely popular. Have you ever tried one? Is it also tasty besides looking fantastic?

#5 Milkshakes Gone CrayCray

Again, another one I’ve only seen on Instagram so far but never tasted one myself: The so called Freakfrappés or Freakshakes, you get the gist. They’re milkshakes gone C-R-A-Z-Y. I always love looking at the photos as they are so aesthetically pleasing, still I don’t know if I’d ever want to eat one, what about you?

#6 Veggies as Mains

This is a trend that I hugely support as I love vegetables. A lot of restaurants, especially around here put a lot of veggie dishes as entrées on their menus, which I love. They also get really creative when it comes to new ways of preparing them, I love it!

#7 Purple Foods

This one is similar to food trend #6 yet a bit more specific. Purple produce such as cauliflower, potatoes, corn, asparagus are becoming more mainstream, according to Whole Foods’ 2017 trends and products report! Colors of fruits and veggies indicate which nutrients they possess. So roasting up a blend of both white and purple potatoes, for example, means you’re giving your body a wider breadth of vitamins for optimal health.

#8 Alga

I present to you the ocean’s new super food: Alga. Already a staple in Asian cuisine, it starts becoming more and more popular in other parts of the world. Known for its protein, little fat and low calories they can be consumed in a multitude of different ways. Some types of alga can be used as alternative to Tagliatelle, some use it as a base for teas. Have you ever tried it?

#9 Sourdough Bread (aka the fermentation theme is back on)

In times of gluten-free diets this bread (despite being a bread) is one of the best breads for you to consume if you are “gluten sensitive”. Why is that you ask? The tradition of fermenting flour with sourdough breaks down the peptides in gluten that give people trouble. This fermentation thing seems to really be a huge deal as it provides you with lots of healthy bacteria that help balance the digestive system and manage your metabolism.

#10 Portuguese Food

Somehow Lisbon and Portugal in general are hugely popular here it seems so it comes as no suprise that there are lots of restaurants and cafés providing Portuguese foods. Hugely famous are of course the custard tarts, have you ever tried them? You should, they’re delicious. Or why not make them yourself this weekend, they’re not that difficult to make. Here goes a recipe you could try.

August 1st as an Expat

Friends!

Long time no see. How are you? How has your summer been so far?

I’ve had a great time. Isn’t summer just simply the best time of year? Anyways, we’re back in the US and settling in again.

And then there was August 1st.

A day that I normally don’t care much about. Surprisingly this time around I thought about it a lot. And as it seems, if you’re a Swiss living abroad you think about August 1st more than you would if you were back home (at least I think so).

So what do you do? You attend all sorts of August 1st related events. Yes. AND they all mainly revolve around food as they usually do (which is totally fine with me) so we went to an August 1st brunch at the Swiss bakery here in town (see my post about finding that bakery here).

And it was glorious. Birchermüesli, Weggli, Croissants, Wähen, Röschti, cheeses…the list goes on.

We were talking with some fellow Swiss friends at the brunch about what the holiday meant to them and they said that August 1st was mainly a holiday they spent with family and that they associated it with time spent outside (as the weather is usually really good round this time of year). What does it mean to you? I’d love to know! I felt still connected to Switzerland even though I wasn’t there.
